The market
What Sydney hiring actually turns on
Sydney's constraint is not the size of the pool, it is that the people who can set a technical bar are already employed and are being approached constantly. The hire that decides everything is usually the first one.
Sydney holds the largest concentration of venture-backed AI work in Australia, alongside a deep financial services sector that has been hiring machine learning people for longer than the startups have. That makes the applied end of the market competitive in a way the headline numbers do not show, because a good applied ML engineer has options that have nothing to do with startups.
The pool is also national rather than local, and more mobile than most clients assume. Sydney and Melbourne overlap heavily, and plenty of strong people will consider either. A search that treats Australia as one market with several centres reaches more of the right people than one that draws a circle around a single city.
The decision that matters most is usually whether this is your first senior AI hire. If it is, that person sets the bar for everyone who follows, and there is nobody in the building yet who can tell you whether they clear it. That is the problem worth buying help with. Later hires are a different and much easier purchase.

Clients
Who we hire for in Sydney
Three kinds of employer, each with a different problem underneath the same job title.
- Venture-backed startups making a first senior AI hire
- Usually the hire that sets the technical bar for everyone after it, which is why getting it wrong is expensive in a way the second hire never is.
- Scale-ups putting models into a product
- Companies past the prototype, hiring machine learning and agentic AI engineers who can carry something into production and keep it running.
- Established companies standing up an AI function
- Financial services, health, retail and government-adjacent organisations building an AI team from nothing, generally starting with the leader.
Roles
What we place in Sydney
The same seven areas we work in everywhere, weighted in Sydney towards applied AI in a product rather than pure research.

- Agentic AI. Agentic AI engineers, evaluation and reliability engineers, and applied engineers building on frontier models
- Data Science. VPs, Directors and Heads of Data Science, principal data scientists and applied scientists
- Forward Deployed Engineering. Forward deployed engineers, including Founding FDEs, and customer-facing AI engineers

Process
How a Sydney search runs
Brief to shortlist is approx. one week and brief to offer is approx. three weeks, run end to end in Sydney time (AEST/AEDT).
Dillan Leslie-Rowe, Co-Founder of Digitalent Australia, runs Australian searches personally. The person who takes your brief maps the market, makes the approaches, sits in the first-stage interviews and handles the offer, so nothing is written up and passed to somebody in another time zone.
On a first senior AI hire we spend longer than most firms would on the brief itself, because the specification is usually the thing that is wrong. It is common to start a search for one title and agree within a week that a different one is what the business actually needs.
FAQ
Hiring AI talent in Sydney: frequently asked questions
- What AI and machine learning roles do you place in Sydney?
- Senior machine learning and AI engineers, applied and research scientists, agentic AI and forward deployed engineers, and the leadership above them: AI Leads, Heads of Machine Learning and Heads of Data Science. Sydney work skews more towards applied AI in a product than towards pure research.
- How does hiring AI talent in Sydney compare with Melbourne?
- Sydney has the larger concentration of venture-backed startups and financial services AI work, and Melbourne more of the enterprise and research-adjacent hiring. In practice the pools overlap heavily and plenty of people will consider either, so a search that treats them as one market with two centres usually reaches more of the right people than one that does not.
- Should we hire in Sydney or offshore the work?
- It depends on whether the hire is the first one. A first senior AI hire sets the technical bar for everyone after them, and that is very hard to do from a distance. Once there is someone in place who can assess the work, distributed hiring becomes far more workable. We will say which of the two you are in rather than take the brief either way.
- Who runs a Sydney search, and in which time zone?
- Dillan Leslie-Rowe, Co-Founder of Digitalent Australia, runs Australian searches personally and in Sydney time (AEST/AEDT), from the first call through to the offer conversation. There is no handover to somebody in another time zone.
