Forward Deployed Engineer Recruitment

Digitalent, the AI/ML executive search firm, places forward deployed engineers into VC-backed startups and established companies across the US, UK and Australia. These are the engineers who sit on a customer site, build the thing, and own the relationship while they do it.

Roles

What we place in Forward Deployed Engineering

These roles come up most often, at both leadership and senior individual contributor level.

  • Forward deployed engineers
  • Founding forward deployed engineers
  • Solutions and deployment engineers with an AI remit
  • Customer-facing AI engineers
  • Internal forward deployed engineers, embedded with the business rather than with customers, building rapid prototypes and AI products alongside operations, finance or marketing
  • Heads of Forward Deployed Engineering

The hard part

What makes these searches hard

The role asks for two things that almost never sit in the same person: production-grade engineering, and the confidence to run a client relationship alone in a room full of non-technical stakeholders. Most strong engineers have never sat across a table from a customer. Most strong consultants cannot build the system.

The pool is also small and badly labelled. The title was coined at Palantir and there are not many forward deployed engineers anywhere, fewer in the UK and fewer again in Australia. Plenty of the people who do the work do not carry the title either. They are inside consultancies, or running their own businesses, or doing it under a job title that predates the term. A search keyed on the words finds only the people who were already easy to find.

Agentic AI is what has made the role urgent. Conventional software can be built away from the customer and shipped to them, but an agent is shaped by their data, their problem and their domain, so most of the useful work is zero to one in the field. That is what forward deployed engineering actually is, and it is why the person usually has to be in the room.

So the bar is high in two directions at once: production-grade agentic engineering, and the composure to build it in front of people from operations, finance, marketing or sales who will judge it on whether it solved their problem. These roles often carry real travel too, in the US sometimes five or six hours each way more than once a week, which tends to be a straightforward yes or no depending on where somebody is in their life.

Because the overlap is so thin, this is a search where volume does nothing and the process filters hard. On one recent engagement several agencies were briefed on the same roles. Our candidate was the only one to clear every stage, and the only placement any of those agencies made. That is the shape of these searches rather than an unusual outcome.

Founding Forward Deployed Engineer at an agentic AI lab

An AI lab in Los Angeles working on computer use and autonomous agents hired its founding Forward Deployed Engineer through Digitalent, a role sitting between research and customer-facing delivery that draws from a very small pool.

The engineer embeds on a client site three to five days a week and owns the relationship alone, so the brief needed production-grade agentic engineering and consulting-level client handling in the same person. The company was also in stealth, which left no brand to open a conversation with, and several agencies were briefed on the same roles.

Ours was the only candidate to clear every stage, across all the agencies briefed, and the only placement any of them made. The client came back with an expanded brief of a further 8 to 12 engineers across Los Angeles and a new Manhattan office, and moved the engagement onto an exclusive footing. A single contingent hire became an ongoing partnership across both coasts.
