The market

What London hiring actually turns on

London is the deepest AI market in Europe and the most expensive place in the UK to get a hire wrong. The two questions worth settling first are who you are really bidding against, and whether the role needs to be in London at all.

More than any other European city, you are competing with the frontier labs. Several run London offices and they want the same research people you do. Alongside them, quantitative finance has been hiring machine learning talent here for far longer than the startup scene has, and pays on a basis that has nothing to do with startup equity. Benchmarking a London offer against other startups alone is how strong candidates are lost at the last stage.

The second question gets asked far too late. London salaries for senior AI and machine learning people run well ahead of the rest of the UK, and a role written as London-only quietly rules out strong people in Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Cambridge who would happily work to a London team. Because we place UK-wide, we can tell you what the same hire looks like outside London before you commit to the premium. Sometimes the answer is that it genuinely has to be London. Often it is not.

Where the role is genuinely scarce, the candidate sets the working pattern rather than you. Insisting on four days in an office for a research direction with a small credible pool can halve a shortlist before it exists. That is a decision worth making deliberately at kickoff, not discovering at offer.

Who we hire for in London

Three kinds of employer, each with a different problem underneath the same job title.

Venture-backed startups building a first AI capability
Seed to Series C, hiring the person who will set the technical bar for everyone after them. The hardest hire to make and the one most often specified wrongly.
Established companies standing up an AI function
Financial services, media, health, insurance and professional services, usually starting with the leader and building down. The largest part of our UK work.
Engineering teams going AI-native
Not AI specialists, but software engineers whose working method has already changed. In London this is a bigger share of demand than anywhere else we work.

An AI team built an hour from London

Our closest AI/ML team build to London is in Guildford, in the South East rather than the capital. It is the fullest example we have of building an AI function from nothing.

Full AI team build, from the leader down, at PE Limited (Petex)

PE Limited, also known as Petex, a software company in Guildford, built its AI function from scratch through Digitalent: the AI Lead first, then the four people who would report to them.

Roles

What we place in London

The same seven areas we work in everywhere, weighted in London towards applied AI and AI-native engineering.

  • AI/ML Engineering. ML engineers from mid to staff level, AI Leads and Heads of Machine Learning
  • Research. Founding research engineers, research scientists and Heads of Research
  • Agentic AI. Agentic AI engineers, evaluation and reliability engineers, and applied engineers building on frontier models
  • Software Engineering (AI). Software Engineers and Senior Software Engineers who build with AI-accelerated engineering tooling as standard

Process

How a London search runs

Brief to shortlist is approx. one week and brief to offer is approx. three weeks.

The person who takes your brief maps the market, makes the approaches, sits in the first-stage interviews and handles the offer. Nothing is written up and handed to someone else, which is why what you say in the kickoff call still shapes the shortlist three weeks later.

On a first senior AI hire we spend longer than most firms would on the brief itself, because the specification is usually the thing that is wrong. It is common to start a search for one title and agree within a week that a different one is what the business actually needs.

FAQ

Hiring AI talent in London: frequently asked questions

What AI and machine learning roles do you place in London?
AI and machine learning engineers, research engineers and scientists, agentic AI and forward deployed engineers, and the leadership above them: AI Leads, Heads of AI and VPs of Machine Learning. We also place software engineers who work AI-natively, which in London is a large and growing part of the market.
Do we actually need to hire in London?
Often not, and it is the question worth asking before the search starts rather than after. London salaries for senior AI and machine learning people run well ahead of the rest of the UK, and a role written as London-only rules out strong people in Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Cambridge who would work to a London team. We place UK-wide, so we will tell you what the same hire looks like outside London before you commit to the premium.
Who are we competing with for AI talent in London?
More than in any other European city, the frontier labs. Several have London offices and they hire the same research people you are after. Beyond that, quantitative finance has been hiring machine learning talent in London for far longer than the startup scene has, and pays on a different basis. Benchmarking a London offer against other startups alone is how good candidates get lost late.
Will candidates accept hybrid or fully remote in London?
It depends on the seniority and how scarce the skill is. For a common skill you can set the pattern. For a research direction where the credible pool is small, the candidate sets it, and insisting on four days in an office can quietly halve your shortlist. We establish this at kickoff and screen to it rather than discovering it at offer stage.
